WEEKEND EXPERIENCE – ART+CULTURE: "I Learned It By Watching You!" by Syndrome

Opening Reception Saturday, 9/6 – 7pm @ Crewest Gallery, Downtown LA

Many of us grew up watching the tube and belong to the MTV generation. For this reason, and because of the modern design, this is the Art+Culture pick for the weekend. Syndrome's "I Learned It By Watching You!" is an observation of the effects of mass media on the public. The show's name was inspired by a popular, Reagan era PSA that aired on American television during the late 1980s (below). The concept behind each piece of art ranges from playful satire to intense realism; each representing a different take on the influence media has on our lives and opinions. The pieces begin as sketches that are later digitized and meticulously retraced. Additional elements are then created in 3D and retraced in the same manner. All of these retraced elements are then composited together and output as silk screens and transferred to wood panels. Syndrome is comprised of artists Micah Hancock, James Larese and Mars Sandoval.
