The Cannes Film Festival was founded in 1946 and is one of the world's oldest and most influential and prestigious film festivals in the world. This years private festival was held between May 14-25, 2008 at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrs, in the resort town of Cannes, south France. Cannes provides film producers an incredibly valuable opportunity to show their work and sell it to distributors from all over the world. With massive media exposure, it is a commonplace for A-List celebs. Cinema is taken so seriously, that a film can often determine a country's image to the rest of the world. The most prestigious award at Cannes is the “Palme d'Or”, or the Golden Palm, which is given for the best film. “The Class” became the first French film in 20 years to win the top prize. Benicio Del Toro was unanimously named Best Actor for his portrayal of Latin American revolutionary Che Guevara in Steven Soderbergh's four-hour biopic, Che.
