New Optical Illusion Tape Designs by Aakash Nihalani

Artist Aakash Nihalani has an incredible talent for creating optical illusions with simple strips of colored masking tape. The New York-based artist really knows what he's doing when it comes to perspective! Using colors and shapes, he creates all kinds of geometric structures that have a three dimensional appearance, and then photographs people interacting with those imaginary spaces. The final result has viewers believing there there really is a pile of pink boxes in the woods or Magdalena really is standing in the middle of an orange and white crate that is just about her height.

In his artist statement, Nihalani says, “I am trying to offer people a chance to step into a different New York than they are used to seeing, and in turn, momentarily escape from routine schedules and lives. We all need the opportunity to see the city more playfully, as a world dominated by the interplay of very basic color and shape.”

These are just a few examples of the playfully imaginative optical illusions designed by Nihalani. You can check out more of his work that he designed in Brooklyn and also some of the installations he put up in India.
