Giant Sculptural Hands Formed from Pieces of Reclaimed Wood

Sculpted with an unconventional carving technique using only a drill and forstner bits, these massive hands are the new work of Andy Tirado. Each finger is individually carved down from a large piece of reclaimed wood with various sizes of forstner bits, which dig perfectly-circular holes with flat bottoms. When fully constructed, the entire piece is then worked over with a reciprocating saw, leaving most of the visible marks that give the hands the rough texture, dotted with holes.

Andy is the shop supervisor for the 3D Arts facility at Colorado College and, for over 14 years, he has put aside his own work to create commercial art projects, such as custom props or film sets. It is only in the last two years that he has transitioned back into making his own work and completed this stunning series of hands.
