Jayne Mansfield, June 29th, 1967.Marc Boland, Helmut Newton, Grace Kelly, Jackson Pollock, Princess Diana, Eddie Cochran, James Dean and Albert Camus all died in a car crash. Photographer Dean Rogers shot these photo’s on the anniversary of a death, and the exact time and location of the crash.People tend to remember these things clearly. I’ve asked some of my friends and family about Princess Diana’s death and most of them remembered exactly where they were, who they were with and what they were doing when they heard the news of her death. I don’t read the gossip magazines, especially not the ones in the waiting room of the doctors office, for fear of catching even more icky germs. Meaning…I don’t go bananas over famous people and I don’t have a death wish. But these photographs fascinate me, because they make me wonder about mortality.Where would the road have lead them if the crash never happened? Would I want to leave this world while I’m obviously still in the middle of doing something…quit while I’m ahead? Or would I want to go when I know everything is done and I have nothing left to do but wait?Yeah, it’s pointless to ponder over “what if’s” and things I can’t possibly predict. It is important to me however to mean something profound to someone in my life. And I can do something about it every day, as long as I’m still around.
