GigaPan – Amazing Billion Pixel Photos

The picture above of the town of Kocani in Macedonia may not look like much but the original of this photo contains 4.9 billion pixels. The actual resolution of this photo is an amazing 226,042 x 21,693 pixels! You can zoom in so far on this image that you can actually read the names on some of the tombstones in the graveyard! The image below is actually a very small part of the one above after zooming WAY in.

These photos are hosted on the GigaPan website. For example, you can find the full version of the Kocani photo here. But GigaPan is much more than just the technology for making these images and more than a website for displaying them. They believe that by creating a community where we can all explore things in such detail we can bring people together. Here is how they describe themselves:

GigaPan is the newest development of the Global Connection Project, which aims to help us meet our neighbors across the globe, and learn about our planet itself. GigaPan will help bring distant communities and peoples together through images that have so much detail that they are, themselves, the objects of exploration, discovery and wonder. We believe that enabling people to explore, experience, and share each other’s worlds can be a transforming experience. Our mission is to make all aspects of the GigaPan experience accessible and affordable to the broadest possible community.

GigaPan consists of three technological developments: a robotic camera mount for capturing very high-resolution (gigapixel and up) panoramic images using a standard digital camera; custom software for constructing very high-resolution gigapixel panoramas; and, a new type of website for exploring, sharing and commenting on gigapixel panoramas and the detail our users will discover within them.

Here’s another one of these incredible photos. It was taken on November 29, 2010 from the top of the Corcovado mountain near the base of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It consists of more than 67 billion pixels!

If you zoom in to where I’ve placed the arrow you will see this guy lounging on the rooftop.

The GigaPan website has hundreds of these photos. Go there and explore our world!
