Nature-Inspired Embroideries Turn Wooden Bags Into Wearable Works of Art

Istanbul-based woodworking studio Grav Grav creates nature-inspired wooden backpacks that you will want to carry everywhere. Its “uniquely spirited wooden bags” are handcrafted with natural materials such as oak, walnut, and beech wood. These wearable pieces of art are adorned with vibrant embroidery, needlepoint, and leather details. Founder Merve Burma writes in a blog post, “In my opinion, wood and leather show us a perfect match. They have a great harmony.”

It is this harmony between plant and animal that Burma strives for in her designs, as well. Her wooden backpacks, purses, and clutches showcase the beautiful variety of wildlife, from nectar-drinking hummingbirds to a tropical pineapple to a budding blossom. The simplicity of the square wooden background amplifies the fine needlework detail. Even simple tree bark has its complexity. “I think every tree’s texture has its unique story and it embodies the soul of nature,” Burma says. “I am enchanted by this magic!”
