Hauntingly Beautiful Black & White Photos of the Taj Mahal

Austrian photographer Josef Hoflehner travels throughout the world to document amazing locations like the beaches of St. Martin in the Caribbean and, in this case, India's Taj Mahal.

In his extensive study of the Taj Mahal, Hoflehner achieves multiple perspectives of the majestic building. He eliminates color and captures the massive structure in just black and white, creating haunting feelings of solitude. According to his bio, “Hoflehner's photographs take his earthly subject matter and raise it to an almost mythical level, defining the essence of the place.”

The artist manages to capture the widely visited mausoleum as an isolated structure with hardly a person in sight. In doing so, he elicits a sense of mystery surrounding one of the world's most recognized architectural masterpieces.
