Meticulously Carved Miniature Manhattan

What exactly are you looking at? Come a little closer and you'll notice a familiar skyline. That's Manhattan, the most recent creation by Yutaka Sone, which he'll be presenting at the David Zwirner gallery in New York starting September 20 and through October 29, 2011. Sone's three-dimensional ode to New York is made from a 2 1/2 ton block of marble. Using both imagery from Google Earth and photos taken from several helicopter rides, Sone was able to recreate the densely-populated metropolis to scale, showing everything from the skyscrapers and bridges to the paths in Central Park. We're talking block by block and building by building…

The Gallery states that “Sone's work revolves around the tension between realism and perfection.” Originally trained as an architect, Sone applies his previous background with his obsessive attention to detail to create one incredible masterpiece. How I'd love to see this in person!
