Innovative Suspended Stairs Double as All-In-One Workspace

There's no wasted space in Mieke Meijer's innovative new design, Object lev. Combining a desk, storage, and shelving, this incredible installation is not only a work-space, but a way to move from one floor to another. The Dutch studio was commissioned by designer Just Haasnoot for his home in The Hague, Netherlands. Handcrafted out of oak wood and black steel, its minimalist and industrial look contrasts nicely with Haasnoot’s pale walls and muted tones.

Object lev is divided into upper and lower sections with a format that allows you to tailor its surfaces to your particular needs. Below, wide pieces of oak are integrated into shelving and storage units, perfect for displaying plants or knickknacks. It features multiple panels with varying height that can be used as a desk or a way to reach the suspended upstairs.

Once you begin to climb the structure, the stairs become smaller and steeper. To mitigate the incline, Mieke Meijer used the samba system of alternating steps that allows for a comfortable walk up and down. Just like the rest of Object lev, the upper section doubles as a bookshelf. While the complexity of this piece could’ve appeared clunky, the designers have thoughtfully made use of open frames, and instead it feels light, open, and ingeniously crafted.
