Movie on the Horizon: Red

The trailer for a new movie called “Red” has just been released. The movie is based on a DC Comics miniseries. It has some terrific actors in the cast including Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, and John Malkovich among others. The story is about a bunch of retired CIA agents who are bored and looking to get back into action. When an assassin tries to kill Bruce Willis he puts the old team back together again. RED stands for “Retired Extremely Dangerous”.I think its very interesting how Hollywood has found such a rich new source of scripts in comics and graphic novels. Its kind of like the sudden trend towards reality TV: once one studio does it successfully, they all jump on board. In this case though the graphic novels and comics come with a built-in fan base ready to whip up interest in any movie. BUT only as long as it stays true to the original vision of that comic. In this case the original Red comic was not a simple shoot ’em up. It had some introspective elements and addressed the feelings of the players that maybe they were just a bit tooo old to be doing this. It will be interesting to see how that sentiment is portrayed in the movie. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters in October.
