Spectacular Shots of Golden Hour Across the World

The golden hour in photography refers to the first and last hour of sunlight during the day, when the light is just perfect for a spectacular shot. During the golden hour, the warm colors of the sun enhance the colors of any scene. In particular, they can cast beautiful, glowing shades of gold and blue onto expansive landscapes and cityscapes.

Recently, National Geographic asked its Your Shot community to submit their best photos taken during the magical time of day. Inside their latest gallery, Golden Hour, you’ll find these awe-inspiring images. Here are some of our favorites.

Matterhorn, Switzerland
This is any photographer’s regular spot for sunrise but I took a bet with sunset and it worked out pretty well. The timing had to be just right. I waited for the sun to disappear behind the peak of Matterhorn, and the colors started to become warm and just about enough for me to capture this shot of the Riffelsee Lake with Matterhorn and the surroundings in the reflections of the lake.

A form of ancient Japanese folk art, temari balls are brightly colored pieces of needlework covered with elaborate patterns. In the Edo period, aristocratic women created temari balls using pieces of silk from spare kimonos in a challenge toward perfection. To a wider public, they became a sensation several years ago after a 92-year-old grandmother’s temari collection went viral.

Adorable Animals Frolic in Snow as Oregon Zoo Is Closed Due to Weather

We may be only about a month into winter, but Portland, Oregon has already seen enough snowfall to satisfy the entire season. During what has been described as a miserable few weeks laced with storms, snow days, and sub-zero temperatures, many of the City of Roses’ residents have opted to keep warm by staying indoors or bundling up before braving the cold. Though the winter blues are normal, not all Oregonians are sick of the snow.
