Reddit user Callofthegame used 5,218 pennies to create a gorgeous tabletop with shimmering geometric designs. The project took about 40 hours from start to finish, most of which was “penny inspection time.” The creator meticulously sorted pennies according to levels of brightness varying from brilliantly shiny to dull chocolate brown.
The base of the table is formed by a core birch door, which sells for about $65 at Home Depot. The artist began the project by nailing trim to the edges of the door to create a small lip and staining it a copper color. Then, he began the tedious process of gluing pennies of alternating shades in 30-60-90 degree angle zig-zags. The final product is comprised of a total of 5,218 pennies and weighs more than 100 pounds.
All of the pennies are heads up, except for one. The creator glued a single penny tails-up to annoy perfectionist dinner guests. “They don't feel settled until they find it,” he says on his Imgur site.
