Super-Sized Light Paintings

You’ve just got to love it when a person says right off the bat, “Dozens of people told me I should patent or make a business selling Light Scythes. I’m not really into that (but it’s open source, so feel free to make your own)!”

Now that we’ve got that out of the way, just what is a Light Scythe? It’s an application for creating programmable LED strips. With what looks like a gigantic light saber, Gavin from Sydney (aka Mechatronics) writes text and creates images that are frozen in mid-air. Inspired by the the video Immaterials: Light Painting WiFi, Gavin decided to create his own contraption using some basic hardware and software.

Pop Photo calls it “a genius way of getting some incredibly detailed images out of light painting and long exposures” while DIY Photography believes that the “applications are endless.”

Coolest part, of course, is that Gavin shares his entire tutorial on his site. Where will creatives take this next? We’ll just have to wait and see…but if I could make one request, more old school video game characters, please!
