THE WEEKEND EXPERIENCE – ART+CULTURE: Worlds on Fire: Grammy Week Art Exhibition by Will.i.am

Exhibition runs daily from February 3rd–February 8th, 2009, , 1pm –7pm: Downtown LA

Worlds on Fire: Grammy-Nominated Artist Exhibition will be the premier event to kick off Grammy week. The ever present, socially conscious, and politically active Will.i.am presents Worlds on Fire, a pop music and pop art collaboration. Worlds on Fire will be the first art exhibition of its kind featuring portraits of 2009 Grammy nominees as drawn by pop surrealism artists. The exhibition's opening night celebration will take place on Monday, February 2 from 7pm-1am at the Pacific Electric Lofts in downtown Los Angeles. Entertainment will be provided by live D.J. sets from Will.i.am and special guests. The opening is reserved only for Gen Art members, however, the gallery exhibition will run daily from 1pm-7pm and is open to the public. A portion of the proceeds of the auction will be donated to the Pea Pod Foundation. Prices will range from $5k-100k for these original pieces. Fifty limited edition giclee prints will be available for sale for the duration of the exhibition (prices will range from $250-400) of which all proceeds will be donated to Pea Pod Foundation. About the Pea Pod Foundation: Founded by will.i.am of The Black Eyed Peas and Polo Molina of Grassroots Productions, The Peapod benefit concerts date back to the earliest incarnation of The Black Eyed Peas and began as charity toy drives for Los Angeles based children and local orphanages. Liberating Portraits of Ballerinas Elegantly Dancing in the Streets of Cairo

Like many dance photographers, Mohamed Taher has a knack for beautifully capturing the body in motion. His interest in movement is evident in his Ballerinas of Cairo series, and the captivating collection of photos also serves a more poignant purpose: it helps women fight sexual harassment and reclaim the city’s streets. After learning about the Ballerina Project, an ongoing series that documents dancers in urban settings across the globe, Taher was inspired to carry out a similar undertaking in the Egyptian capital.
