THE WEEKEND EXPERIENCE – MOVIES OPENING 1/30

PICK OF THE WEEK

Taken Liam Neeson is an unstoppable gangsta in this flick. Bryan has taken early retirement from the CIA in order to live closer to his teenage daughter, Kim (Maggie Grace). When Kim announces that she’s taking a trip to Paris with her friend Amanda, Bryan is apprehensive about her traveling on her own. His worst fear is soon realized, as Kim and Amanda are abducted upon their arrival in France. Bryan immediately springs into action, using his well-honed CIA skills to piece together clues from a single, frantic phone call he received from Kim. LOW BUDGET ROMANTIC MOVIE THAT COULD

Medicine for Melancholy This film is getting great reviews. San Francisco is the setting for potential romance in this low-budget romance. Though Jo’ (Tracey Heggins) and Micah (Wyatt Cenac) wake up next to one another, they have no idea what brought them to that point. Medicine for Melancholy follows the pair as they travel through the California city, exploring the streets as well as the possibility of a deeper connection with one another. Critics are saying that this movie is a thoughtful, often poignant study of modern urban life and race. SCARY MOVIE OF THE WEEK

The Uninvited Korean horror continues its ascent with this remake of Kim Jee-Woon’s Changhwa Hongryon. Emily Browning stars as a young woman whose mother has recently died. When she returns to live with her father, she discovers that he is engaged to a woman (Elizabeth Banks) whose pretty looks belie sinister motives. Critics are giving it mixed reviews and are saying that experienced horror fans will probably stay one step ahead of the game, but it’s still a nice ride. check movie showtimes
