Repetitive Typography Forms Incredible Illusions of Space

Modern Mantra is a series of 18 drawings where words and letters are transformed into typography objects. In each piece, Swedish artist Thomas Broom makes great use of the English language to convey his creative interpretations of various home interiors including a basic bedroom, living room, and dining room. He uses Indian ink on stark white paper to create the simple black and white illustrations.

Each group of repetitive words are arranged at angled perspectives to give the illusion of space. The long, thin font forms patterns ranging in size from large to teeny-tiny. Broom spares no detail and includes everything from a ceiling fan to the leaves on a houseplant. A combination of basic language, repetition, and a persuaded imagination, the artist leads his viewers to a thorough understanding of the space without providing one actual detail.
