Manhattan Loft Seamlessly Blends Modern Gallery Aesthetic

New York City is jammed packed with all kinds of interesting things including lots of great architecture and creative living spaces. This unique loft, designed by Dutch architectural design studio UNStudio, is a dream apartment for many Manhattan residents. Located in Greenwich Village, the 5,840-square foot apartment blends many elements of living quarters with components of a gallery exhibition space.

This idea was concocted when a collector purchased the loft space and commissioned UNStudio to design the residence as a home for the himself as well as his art and books. The long, wide space offered challenges to the design firm, but the final results are spectacular. Smooth, curved lines and stark white walls flow throughout, housing both library shelves as well as display cases. 18,000 LED lights illuminate the ceiling with backlighting, giving the illusion of height. Additionally, floor to ceiling windows and a glass balcony offer stunning views of lower Manhattan, which the owner can enjoy from many vantage points in his home.

UNStudio describes their design: “While the walls form a calm and controlled backdrop for the works of art, the ceiling is more articulated in its expression of this transition. By interchanging luminous and opaque, the ceiling creates a field of ambient and local lighting conditions, forming an organizational element in the exhibition and the living areas.” With such an amazing living space, the owner is able to exhibit all of his collections within his own home, which is a work of art in and of itself.
