A Modern, Green, Underground Family Fun House

British architect Alex Michaelis created an modern, eco-friendly home for him, his wife and his three kids in London. The subterranean fun house was made with his kids in mind; it has everything from a slide to an indoor pool and rock climbing wall. If that's not enough, they also have a foosball table and giant bean bags.

“Everyone in the family was involved in the design and got to say what he or she wanted,” Michaelis says.

To make this house eco-friendly he built a roof with solar panels to supply energy, a sedum lawn to retain heat and installed a geothermal pump to draw natural heat from the earth. And to keep the house clean and modern they decorated sparingly with just the right furniture, including a Saarinen Tulip table and an Eames lounge chair.

I've always been worried that when it's time to have kids my dreams of having a modern, green house would be pushed aside. It's nice to see that balance can be achieved.

Thanks for doing all the legwork, Alex. I can't wait to move in! (I wish.)
