Soulful Portraits of Dogs Exploring the Desolate Beauty of Arctic Landscapes

Dog Portraits by Alicja Myslowska

Poland-based photographer Alicja Zmysłowska combines the stunning beauty of desolate landscapes with the spirited personality of adventurous pups. Her series, titled Craving Miracles, is a three-year endeavor that has taken her and her favorite canines to the idyllic locations of Iceland, Norway, and Alaska. There, she has snapped pictures of the dogs as they interact with the environment at large. They are seen exploring massive caverns, running across green fields, and traversing rushing waters. The dogs’ boundless energy and inherent curiosity is a charming complement to the stillness of remote locales.

As a canine photographer, Zmysłowska recognizes the special qualities of her subjects. “Dogs are [man’s] best friends and each dog is unique with a beautiful, different soul,” she tells My Modern Met in an email, “and I try every day to show it in my art.” To do this, she continually pushes herself in concept and technique; Craving Miracles does both. “I… wanted to go out from my comfort zone and colorful portraits of dogs which I was used to,” she explains. “Also reaching locations and conditions for photos in which I was taking those photos weren’t that easy as with usual dog photography in local forest or park.”

Zmysłowska’s beautiful images show a dedication and experience that goes well beyond her 22 years. To see more of her work—including behind the scene shots of pups and foxes—follow the photographer on Instagram.
