Giant Wall Built Out of 3,500 Colorful Books

This wall by artist Anouk Kruithof, entitled Enclosed Content Chatting Away in the Colour Invisibility, consists of more than 3,500 colorful bound books, stacked in a precariously balanced, rectangular pile. Born in the Netherlands, Kruithof believes in the infinite possibilities of photography. She builds many sculptures and minimalist structures that serve as the base for her work, and then documents the work through her camera lens.

The majority of the books used in these installations are found items that, under other circumstances, would be tossed in the garbage or recycled at the paper mill. The spatial sculpture is installed differently each time, as the fragments are pieced together into a unique, collective whole. The history of the written words, combined with the visual variations in book size, shape, and tonal color ranges, gives new life to otherwise meaningless objects. The New York-based artist's bio states, “She revitalizes these books by using them as objects (bricks). The colors and sizes of these books determine the rhythm of the rising wall in form of a physical installation as well as a video loop, which is strong and unstable at the same time.”

To see how unstable and temporary each piece really is, you can watch the video below. At first, you may think nothing is happening, but wait a minute and you'll see the wall begin to collapse. Each installation always includes this kind of continuous video loop.
