Artists on Instagram Are Sharing Photos of Themselves Surrounded by Their Artwork

A post shared by Liam Ashurst (@liamashurst) on

If you’re an artist, Instagram is one of the best apps to share your work on. The visuals-focused platform puts images first and welcomes a wide array of media and styles. So, it’s no surprise that from time to time, memes and challenges arise that invite creatives to post their work in a different format. Since 2016, artists have been sharing photos of themselves surrounded by their work using the hashtag #artvsartist.

The general format is simple and easy to replicate by anyone. In nine squares, eight of them feature artwork while the center image is reserved for a selfie. It’s extremely popular with the drawing and illustration crowd, and the mini portfolio showcases some of their best pieces.

#Artvsartist plays another important role in addition to self-promotion—it reminds followers that there is a person behind the artwork. These individuals are trying to hone their craft while sharing their creative souls with the world at large. It's something to celebrate!

Check out some of our favorite iterations of #artvsartist below.

(Looking for more art-making memes? The draw this again challenge has creatives redrawing their work from years ago and placing the two pieces side by side to see how much they’ve improved.)
