Startling Camouflaged Butterfly Portraits

In this work, magnificent textures and colors of enlarged butterfly wings are combined with female faces to create a unique twist on portrait photography. Carsten Witte fuses these two forms of natural beauty together in his series Camouflage.

The manipulation of shadow and light leads the viewer to look directly into the eyes of his subjects. The natural allure of each female face perfectly combines with the intricate details of each butterfly wing. When photographing, Witte says, “It's always faces that fascinate me and this mysterious purity of really beautiful people.”

It's difficult to tell how these images were created–is it light projection, possibly Photoshop or maybe even painted faces? Ultimately, that is Witte's intention as he offers us pieces to the puzzle by saying, “Everyone has to solve the mystery himself.”
