Although clouds can be associated with doom and gloom, Russian artist Vera Shimunia’s embroidery art is a reminder that there’s beauty to be found even on a stormy day. When we first introduced you to Shimunia earlier this year, the talented stitcher was creating incredible embroidered landscapes that capture the vibrant beauty of nature. However, she has recently brought her craft to the next level through the addition of puffy three-dimensional clouds.

Each textile scene is rendered using a variety of stitches, resulting in textural embroidery designs that look like colorful landscape paintings. Meadows, mountainscapes, and ocean views are beautifully hand-stitched and framed inside embroidery hoops, resulting in little worlds you can hold in the palm of your hand. However, it’s Shimunia’s vibrant skies that make her artwork truly enchanting. Pink sunsets, sun beams, and swirling stormy skies are depicted with a myriad of multicolored stitches and cotton candy-like balls of wool.

From subtle, wispy clouds to tumbling masses of fluffy fiber, Shimunia’s work showcases the diverse beauty of the sky. In one piece, soft white clouds burst through a blue sky and, in another, a spectacular cluster of sunset-hued pom poms dramatically explode from the confines of the embroidery hoop.

You can find more from Shimunia’s portfolio on Instagram, and purchase her embroidery designs on Etsy.
