When beginning a jigsaw puzzle, you probably follow the tried-and-true advice to “start with the edges.” While diving in frame-first may have worked for you in the past, design studio Nervous System thinks that piecing together a puzzle should be a bit more challenging—an approach embodied by their Earth Puzzle.
This perplexing puzzle will offer you a new way to look at the world. With “no edges, no North and South, and no fixed shape,” it prompts you to start anywhere and simply see where each piece takes you. This means that, while the finished image will always be accurate (the map itself is based on an icosahedral projection and has the topology of a sphere), no two journeys will be alike!
Each “infinity puzzle” is composed of 441 laser-cut birch plywood pieces. Like those that make up Nervous System's popular geode puzzle, these pieces are crafted using custom software and based on natural patterns. In addition to these abstract, intertwining forms, however, each Earth puzzle features a fun selection of fauna-inspired silhouettes. Strategically placed, these 16 animal-shaped pieces let you learn about the world's wildlife as you piece together your whole new world.
