Ghostly Wire Mesh Sailboat Rises from Sea for a Floating Musical Concert

After his recent installation in Abu Dhabi, where the Italian artist filled a pavilion with wire mesh architecture, Edoardo Tresoldi returns to his home country for a new experimental work that combines his bold wire sculptures with music. For Locus, Tresoldi molds his signature wire mesh into an artistic floating sculpture that transforms a row boat into a haunting sailboat.

Using simple geometric forms floating in the waters of Sapri, Italy, Tresoldi sets an ethereal scene that is enhanced by the lighting design of Luca Agnani. Perched inside the row boat, musician IOSONOUNCANE played an electronic soundscape for viewers on the nearby beach, making the installation the perfect sensory combination.

As is typical of Tresoldi's outdoor installations, the work takes on new dimensions throughout the day, as natural light allows the mesh to cast evolving shadows and filter the colorful light of the Southern Italian seaside town's sky. It took Tresoldi and his team of assistants one month to create the monumental work, which was inspired by the bay of Sapri. “What interested me wasn't so much the subject, but rather an element related to the bay of Sapri, a place of breathtaking beauty,” the artist explains. “The sail is an imaginary element that I worked on after following the path of my artistic research. This involves cutting up, deconstructing, and being contaminated by the surrounding landscape.”

Unfortunately, this ghostly sailboat has drifted on and is no longer visible. The dramatic audiovisual installation was only temporary, as it was part of the inaugural Derive Festival, an experimental arts festival involving visual arts, poetry, and music.
