A cualquiera que le hayan robado una maleta sabe que es toda una pesadilla. Pero, ¿y si tu equipaje contuviera más que ropa y objetos personales? Desafortunadamente, esto fue lo que le sucedió al fotógrafo Joel Sartore<\/a> de National Geographic, a quien le fue robado su equipaje de mano en el aeropuerto de Bali el 20 de diciembre. Como casi todo el equipaje de mano, su maleta contenía cosas de valor, como su pasaporte, computadora, cámaras, y—tal vez lo más importante—tres discos duros llenos de imágenes irremplazables.<\/p>\n

Sartore, quien pidió ayuda en Instagram, está buscando desesperadamente su maleta Samsonite por estos discos duros. Cada uno contiene fotografías invaluables tomadas en un viaje de tres semanas a Indonesia que Sartore destinó a The Photo Ark<\/em><\/a>. Este ambicioso proyecto tiene como objetivo capturar la biodiversidad del mundo al fotografiar cada especie que vive en un zoológico o santuario de vida silvestre alrededor del mundo.<\/p>\n

Este proyecto significa mucho para el fotógrafo, y, en una entrevista exclusiva<\/a> con My Modern Met, contó lo que significa para él trabajar en The Photo Ark<\/em>. “Algo que me impulsa es el hecho de que, para muchas de las especies más pequeñas que fotografío, esta es la única vez que sus historias serán contadas a una audiencia global. Para algunos, esta puede ser la diferencia entre supervivencia y extinción, dependiendo de si el público se preocupa lo suficiente como para salvar su hábitat, disminuya la contaminación, etc. Entonces, ya sea que estemos celebrando pececillos, gorriones o salamandras, esa es una motivación poderosa que me hace seguir adelante”.<\/p>\n

De acuerdo con el fotógrafo, los discos duros perdidos contienen imágenes y videos de algunas de las especies más raras del mundo. La pérdida de estas fotos es un gran golpe para Sartore, cuyo objetivo es promover la conservación animal ante la rápida extinción de muchas especies. Aunque este dedicado fotógrafo ha cargado imágenes de más de 9,800 especies a la base de datos de The Photo Ark<\/em>, completar este proyecto tomará aproximadamente 25 años.<\/p>\n

To All Friends of the Photo Ark, ‪Last Friday night at the Bali Airport, one of my pieces of carry-on luggage was stolen, a black Samsonite rolling bag. Unfortunately, the bag contained not only my computer, cameras, and passport, but also three hard drives that were loaded with images and videos of some of the world’s rarest animals. All were filmed during the past three weeks in Indonesia, an amazing country with incredible biodiversity. All were destined to become part of the Photo Ark.‬ I need your help now to bring these hard drives home. No questions asked. Each is blue in color, either 1 TB or 2 TB, and are made by Silicon Power. An example is shown above. As a small, forest-dwelling species, the Visayan ​tarictic​ hornbill’s high-pitched call is often heard echoing through the trees well before the bird is spotted in the wild. Once relatively abundant on the islands of Negros and Panay, researchers believe there are now less than 1,000 individuals remaining. Logging and Kaingin (shifting cultivation) are popular practices throughout the hornbill’s home range which has led to extensive deforestation. In 1988, it was estimated that just four percent of forest cover remained on the island of Negros, and eight percent on Panay. ​Hunting and the wild pet trade are also significant threats to Visayan tarictic hornbills and a number of other species living in the greater Negros-Panay region. A kit fox @southwestwildlife Conservation Center (SWCC) in Scottsdale, Arizona. Those big ears help not only to hear prey, but also to dissipate heat in the Arizona summers. SWCC is celebrating more than 20 years of saving injured and orphaned wildlife with the goal of returning as many animals to the wild as possible. Those that cannot be released due to permanent injury are given sanctuary. Pronghorn antelope are original Native Americans, with no close relatives in North America or on any other continent. The peninsular pronghorn, pictured here @lazoo, is endemic to Baja California, Mexico and is one of five pronghorn subspecies. Only 150 peninsular pronghorn remain, putting this subspecies at high risk for extinction. Pronghorn began to disappear from the landscape as settlers moved west, eliminating habitat and causing food to become scarce. For the peninsular pronghorn in particular, hunting, agriculture, and cattle ranching combined with livestock fences were all factors that led to their rapid decline. A number of zoos and organizations are working to reestablish peninsular pronghorn in protected areas of Baja California, and the Los Angeles Zoo is home to an assurance herd that will ensure the subspecies survives in the event that a natural disaster or disease wipes out wild populations. #pronghorn #antelope #nativeamerican #PhotoArk #savetogether<\/a><\/p>\n

​The Panamanian golden frog, Panama’s national animal, has been symbolic of good fortune for many years, but the emergence of a fungal disease called chytridiomycosis has put this species’ luck to the test. Not unlike other living organisms, this fungus has a “breeding season” – if temperatures are too hot or too cold it, it lies dormant. But when temperatures are just right, like in areas where the Panamanian golden frogs live, the fungus multiplies and spreads very quickly, becoming so aggressive it can wipe out an entire species, sometimes in less than a year. As ‘chytrid’ spreads, biologists are racing the clock to determine where this fungus originated, how it has spread so rapidly, and how to control it.
