Los devastadores incendios forestales en Australia no dan tregua, por lo que la familia de Steve Irwin ha redoblado sus esfuerzos en su misión de proteger con la vida silvestre. Como dueños del Zoológico de Australia, la familia ha tratado a más de 90,000 animales y continúan trabajando para salvar la vida de las criaturas que han resultado heridas en los incendios. En una publicación reciente en Instagram<\/a>, Bindi Irwin le dijo a sus seguidores que si bien su familia y el zoológico están fuera de peligro, su hospital para la vida silvestre ha estado más ocupado que nunca con tantos pacientes.<\/p>\n

Aunque los incendios forestales son comunes durante esta época del año, el fuego no se ha detenido desde agosto de 2019 y no parece perder fuerza. Recientemente, tres incendios se fusionaron para crear un solo incendio más grande que Manhattan. Tan solo en Nueva Gales del Sur se han perdido casi 1,500 hogares y 24 personas han muerto a causa de los incendios. Sin embargo, los animales quizás sean los que más sufren, ya que miles han perdido su hábitat–y muchos más no han logrado escapar. Los koalas se han visto particularmente afectados, por lo que algunos expertos declararon funcionalmente extintos<\/a> después de que el 30% de una colonia importante perdió la vida.<\/p>\n

Esto hace que el trabajo de los Irwin sea aún más importante. Toda la familia sigue con la misión de Steve Irwin, quien falleció en 2006. El presentador de televisión australiano, también conocido como “el cazador de cocodrilos”, asumió el liderazgo del zoológico de Australia después de sus padres. With so many devastating fires within Australia, my heart breaks for the people and wildlife who have lost so much. I wanted to let you know that we are SAFE. There are no fires near us @AustraliaZoo or our conservation properties. Our Wildlife Hospital is busier than ever though, having officially treated over 90,000 patients. My parents dedicated our Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital to my beautiful grandmother. We will continue to honour her by being Wildlife Warriors and saving as many lives as we can. 💙🙏🏼<\/a><\/p>\n

“Mis padres dedicaron nuestro Hospital de Vida Silvestre del Zoológico de Australia a mi bella abuela”, Bindi escribió en Instagram. “Seguiremos honrándola siendo guerreros de la vida silvestre y salvando tantas vidas como sea posible”.<\/p>\n

Aunque trabajan incansablemente para brindar atención de primer nivel a todos sus pacientes, el hospital tristemente no ha podido salvar a todos los animales que recibe. Bindi también compartió una foto de Blossom, una zarigüeya que sufrió quemaduras graves en un incendio en Queensland. Desafortunadamente, a pesar de que el equipo médico hizo su mejor esfuerzo, la zarigüeya no sobrevivió.<\/p>\n

“Esta es la desgarradora realidad, levantarse y hablar por aquellos que no pueden hablar por sí mismos es una batalla diaria”, escribió<\/a>. “Ahora más que nunca necesitamos trabajar juntos para hacer la diferencia y proteger a nuestra Madre Tierra”.<\/p>\n

Robert<\/a>, quien tiene 16 años, también ha estado dando actualizaciones sobre el trabajo del hospital. El joven publicó un video de unos murciélagos de frutas huérfanos siendo alimentados con biberón. Ellos, junto con miles –o millones– de otros animales, han perdido sus hogares en los incendios forestales.<\/p>\n

The #AustraliaZoo Wildlife Hospital takes in animals from all over Australia. Hundreds of grey-headed flying foxes, a species listed as vulnerable, have been flown to Queensland after the rescue centre they were recovering in was at risk from fire and evacuated. Some of the orphans are now being cared for by the team at the hospital until they’re big enough to go home, and there’s no threat of fire. 🦇 In September, flying fox admissions to the hospital skyrocketed by over 750% due to drought conditions and lack of food. Flying foxes are now being drastically affected by wildfires and we’re again seeing an influx of these beautiful animals from across the country. This week, we treated our 90,000th patient. To cope with so many animals being admitted to the hospital, in 2019 we opened a sea turtle rehabilitation centre, sea snake ward and are about to complete a new bird recovery area, but it’s still not enough to keep up. We need to build a new ward for our patients. Brian the koala’s home was destroyed by a bushfire and he was suffering from smoke inhalation. Thankfully, after treatment at the #AustraliaZoo Wildlife Hospital he could be released into an area not affected by the fires. 💚🐨🍃<\/a><\/p>\n
