Era la cuarta hija en una familia de 14 hermanos. Su padre, Justo G&oacute;mez Mallo, era funcionario de aduanas, por lo que la familia se trasladaba con frecuencia. En 1913 se mudaron a la ciudad asturiana de Avil&eacute;s, donde permanecer&iacute;an hasta 1922. Ese mismo a&ntilde;o, a los 20 a&ntilde;os de edad, la artista fue admitida en la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando en Madrid. En ese centro educativo conoci&oacute; a <a href=\"https:\/\/mymodernmet.com\/es\/salvador-dali-datos-curiosos\/\"><strong>Salvador Dal&iacute;<\/strong><\/a>; intrigado por la joven artista, Dal&iacute; incluy&oacute; a Mallo en su grupo de amistades, en el que figuraban <strong>Luis Bu&ntilde;uel<\/strong> y <strong>Federico Garc&iacute;a Lorca<\/strong>. Los cuatro j&oacute;venes ten&iacute;an una fascinaci&oacute;n compartida por las profundidades del pensamiento y del subconsciente, y se sent&iacute;an atra&iacute;dos por las vanguardias art&iacute;sticas que ya empezaban a cobrar fuerza en el resto de Europa.<\/p>\n<p>Durante su tiempo en Madrid, Maruja Mallo fue una figura central de <strong>las Sinsombrero<\/strong>, llamadas as&iacute; por un acto de rebeld&iacute;a en el que particip&oacute; junto con Margarita Manso, Dal&iacute; y Garc&iacute;a Lorca. Los cuatro j&oacute;venes visitaron la Puerta del Sol y al llegar ah&iacute; se quitaron el sombrero, cuyo uso era la norma en ese entonces. &#8220;Nos apedrearon llam&aacute;ndonos de todo&#8221;, recordar&iacute;a la artista a&ntilde;os despu&eacute;s. Este acto transgresor simbolizaba la liberaci&oacute;n de las ideas y, en el caso de las mujeres del grupo, la no conformidad con el papel de madre y esposa tradicional. La exposici&oacute;n estuvo protagonizada por la serie <strong><em>Verbena <\/em><\/strong>de Mallo, que retrata el caos y el bullicio de estas fiestas populares. Esta serie se inspira en el <strong>realismo m&aacute;gico<\/strong> y se caracteriza por su vivacidad y uso de color. Si bien la serie fue bien recibida, el estilo de la artista dio un giro de 180 grados al llegar la d&eacute;cada de 1930. Mallo, quien para entonces hab&iacute;a desarrollado una fuerte afinidad hacia la clase obrera y reprobaba la violencia de los sublevados, reaccion&oacute; al golpe militar exili&aacute;ndose en la ciudad de Buenos Aires, Argentina. Ah&iacute; escribir&iacute;a numerosos libros sobre su pr&aacute;ctica y filosof&iacute;a art&iacute;stica, adem&aacute;s de textos period&iacute;sticos en apoyo al bando republicano.<\/p>\n<p>Durante su tiempo en Argentina, Mallo qued&oacute; fascinada con los escritos sobre el n&uacute;mero de oro y la teor&iacute;a est&eacute;tica y de proporci&oacute;n de la naturaleza de <strong>Matila C. Ghyka<\/strong>. Este amor por la armon&iacute;a y el rigor cient&iacute;fico est&aacute; detr&aacute;s de su serie <strong><em>Naturaleza viva<\/em><\/strong>. Bas&aacute;ndose en la tradici&oacute;n art&iacute;stica de la <a href=\"https:\/\/mymodernmet.com\/es\/definicion-naturaleza-muerta\/\">naturaleza muerta<\/a>, Mallo cre&oacute; composiciones geom&eacute;tricas que son protagonizadas por conchas y criaturas marinas.<\/p>\n<p>Adem&aacute;s de sus <em>Naturalezas vivas<\/em>, Mallo tambi&eacute;n pint&oacute; m&aacute;scaras con fondos oce&aacute;nicos y numerosos retratos inexpresivos. Regres&oacute; con miedo pero, para su sorpresa, su llegada a Espa&ntilde;a no tuvo repercusiones. A&uacute;n as&iacute;, la artista mantuvo un perfil bajo hasta la muerte del dictador en 1975.<\/p>\n<p>Si bien hab&iacute;a tenido reconocimiento en los a&ntilde;os 20 y durante su exilio, Maruja descubri&oacute; que su obra hab&iacute;a sido olvidada en su pa&iacute;s. Determinada a recuperar el reconocimiento, Mallo se volvi&oacute; una figura casi omnipresente en los c&iacute;rculos art&iacute;sticos de Madrid. Su excentricidad llam&oacute; la atenci&oacute;n de la generaci&oacute;n de <a href=\"https:\/\/mymodernmet.com\/es\/movida-madrilena\/\"><strong>la<\/strong> <strong>Movida<\/strong><\/a>, y pronto se volver&iacute;a un &iacute;cono entre los artistas del movimiento. En esta &eacute;poca tambi&eacute;n inici&oacute; su &uacute;ltima serie, <em>Los moradores del vac&iacute;o<\/em>. El punto focal de las pinturas de esta serie es el espacio: en ellas, Mallo retrata planetas, sat&eacute;lites y conjunciones astrales inventados que exploran la relaci&oacute;n del ser humano con la infinidad del universo.<\/p>\n<p>En los &uacute;ltimos a&ntilde;os de su vida, Mallo sufri&oacute; una rotura de cadera que la dej&oacute; inmovilizada en una residencia geri&aacute;trica. La artista falleci&oacute; 10 a&ntilde;os despu&eacute;s, en 1995.
