Lo que comenz&oacute; como fotograf&iacute;a de guerra se ha extendido paulatinamente a otros eventos de inter&eacute;s period&iacute;stico, como los deportes, e incluso ha adoptado una narrativa extensa a trav&eacute;s de ensayos fotogr&aacute;ficos.<\/p>\n<p>Si bien algunos dicen que su mejor momento qued&oacute; atr&aacute;s con el cierre de revistas fotogr&aacute;ficas como<em> LIFE<\/em>, los fot&oacute;grafos se han adaptado, vali&eacute;ndose de nuevas tecnolog&iacute;as y medios para seguir contando las historias que interesan (y deber&iacute;an interesar) a la sociedad contempor&aacute;nea. Echemos un vistazo a los or&iacute;genes del fotoperiodismo y su evoluci&oacute;n a lo largo de la historia, desde las primicias hist&oacute;ricas hasta las controversias y los fot&oacute;grafos m&aacute;s c&eacute;lebres.\n<\/p>\n<h2>Fotograf&iacute;a de guerra y los or&iacute;genes del fotoperiodismo<\/h2>\n<p>El fotoperiodismo tiene sus ra&iacute;ces en la fotograf&iacute;a de guerra: espec&iacute;ficamente, en Roger Fenton, quien fue un pionero durante la Guerra de Crimea. Fenton fue el primer fot&oacute;grafo de guerra oficial y captur&oacute; im&aacute;genes que demostraron los efectos de la guerra. Su trabajo fue publicado en <a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Illustrated_London_News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Illustrated London News<\/em>,<\/a> llevando estas im&aacute;genes a una audiencia masiva por primera vez.<\/p>\n<p>Ilustrar noticias con im&aacute;genes solo fue posible gracias a los avances tecnol&oacute;gicos. Brady comenz&oacute; fotografiando a las tropas antes de su partida, jugando con la idea de que tal vez no regresar&iacute;an y querr&iacute;an que se les tomara un retrato para sus familiares. La producci&oacute;n de Brady era monumental para el momento: empleaba a 20 asistentes, cada uno equipado con un cuarto oscuro m&oacute;vil. Si bien a veces ha sido criticado por no tomar todas las im&aacute;genes &eacute;l mismo, su trabajo y el posterior &eacute;xito de su primera exposici&oacute;n en 1862 le han valido el reconocimiento como uno de los pioneros del fotoperiodismo.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Documentaci&oacute;n social y avances tecnol&oacute;gicos<\/h2>\n<p>En la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, el campo se expandir&iacute;a m&aacute;s all&aacute; de las fotos de guerras y desastres. El fot&oacute;grafo John Thomson se uni&oacute; al periodista Adolphe Smith para una revista mensual que describ&iacute;a la vida de la gente en las calles de Londres. El medio tono, que finalmente reemplaz&oacute; al grabado, permiti&oacute; imprimir toda la gama de sombras en las fotograf&iacute;as y aceler&oacute; enormemente el proceso de impresi&oacute;n. La mayor&iacute;a de los peri&oacute;dicos adoptaron esta tecnolog&iacute;a a principios de la d&eacute;cada de 1900. El flash en polvo permiti&oacute; la fotograf&iacute;a espont&aacute;nea en interiores, algo que ser&iacute;a fundamental para el principal fotoperiodista social de la &eacute;poca, <a href=\"https:\/\/mymodernmet.com\/es\/jacob-riis-how-the-other-half-lives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jacob Riis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Riis, un inmigrante dan&eacute;s, lleg&oacute; a los Estados Unidos en 1870. Su obra fundamental, <em>How the Other Half Lives<\/em>, document&oacute; las vidas de los inmigrantes que viv&iacute;an en los barrios bajos y los vecindarios de Nueva York. Utilizado como catalizador de la reforma social, su trabajo mostr&oacute; el poder real que pod&iacute;a tener el fotoperiodismo para impulsar un cambio.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Fotoperiodistas de la Edad de Oro<\/h2>\n<p>Desde la d&eacute;cada de 1930 hasta la de 1970, el fotoperiodismo vio su &#8220;Edad de Oro&#8221;, donde la tecnolog&iacute;a y el inter&eacute;s p&uacute;blico se alinearon para llevar este campo al siguiente nivel. Innovaciones como la bombilla de flash y la c&aacute;mara compacta Leica de 35 mm hicieron que la fotograf&iacute;a fuese m&aacute;s port&aacute;til que nunca. Revistas en las que las fotograf&iacute;as eran el elemento principal, como <em>Berliner Illustrate Zeitung<\/em>, <em>The New York Daily News<\/em> y <em>LIFE<\/em>, emplearon a una gran cantidad de fot&oacute;grafos y utilizaron el ensayo fotogr&aacute;fico como un medio para difundir noticias.<\/p>\n<p>Las mujeres tambi&eacute;n se convirtieron en figuras destacadas en este campo, siendo Margaret Bourke-White la primera reportera de guerra estadounidense y la fot&oacute;grafa de la primera portada de <em>LIFE<\/em>. Dorothea Lange fue una de los muchos fot&oacute;grafos empleados por la Farm Security Administration para documentar la Gran Depresi&oacute;n. Una pionera de la fotograf&iacute;a documental, su imagen <em>Migrant Mother<\/em> (&#8220;Madre migrante&#8221;) se convirti&oacute; en un &iacute;cono de la &eacute;poca.<\/p>\n<p>En otro acontecimiento importante, en 1947 los fotoperiodistas Robert Capa, David &#8220;Chim&#8221; Seymour y Henri Cartier-Bresson se encontraban entre los que crearon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magnumphotos.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Magnum Photos<\/a>. Considerado como una forma de arte por derecho propio, premios espec&iacute;ficos como <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldpressphoto.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World Press Photo<\/a> y, desde 1968, el <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pulitzer.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Premio Pulitzer <\/a> reconocen a los mejores en este campo cada a&ntilde;o. Dividida en ocho categor&iacute;as, desde deportes hasta proyectos a largo plazo, la variedad de entradas para los premios World Press Photo muestra la amplitud y profundidad de esta rama de la fotograf&iacute;a.<\/p>\n<p>La aparici&oacute;n de las tecnolog&iacute;as digitales tambi&eacute;n ha cambiado el fotoperiodismo. En un campo donde impera la &eacute;tica period&iacute;stica, la manipulaci&oacute;n de fotograf&iacute;as es una discusi&oacute;n seria. Si bien la fotograf&iacute;a de guerra tiene una historia de fotos en escena, especialmente debido a las limitaciones hist&oacute;ricas de la tecnolog&iacute;a, los fotoperiodistas trabajan con la idea de que las escenas no deben ser puestas en escena ni manipuladas. Dado que la manipulaci&oacute;n digital es m&aacute;s accesible que nunca, la precisi&oacute;n es algo que todo fot&oacute;grafo debe tener en cuenta.
