Aunque todav&iacute;a no se sabe mucho sobre lo que est&aacute; pasando en tierra en Tonga, varios investigadores han ido aportando m&aacute;s datos sobre la gigantesca explosi&oacute;n. Una de las grandes inc&oacute;gnitas hasta ahora era esta: &iquest;qu&eacute; magnitud tuvo la erupci&oacute;n del volc&aacute;n, que fue tan grande que pudo verse desde el espacio? Seg&uacute;n la NASA, fue m&aacute;s potente que la bomba nuclear lanzada sobre Hiroshima durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.<\/p>\n<p>A la hora de cuantificar las cosas, James Garvin, el cient&iacute;fico jefe del Centro de Vuelo Espacial Goddard de la NASA, dijo a NPR que estiman que la explosi&oacute;n fue el equivalente a 10 megatones de TNT. Esto no solo la hace m&aacute;s potente que la bomba de Hiroshima, sino que en realidad es 500 veces m&aacute;s potente.<\/p>\n<p>La explosi&oacute;n provoc&oacute; alertas de tsunami en todo el mundo y dos personas murieron en la costa de Per&uacute; debido a las olas provocadas por el volc&aacute;n. El Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha'apai entr&oacute; en erupci&oacute;n el 15 de enero, lanzando una enorme cantidad de ceniza y humo a la atm&oacute;sfera. La principal l&iacute;nea de comunicaci&oacute;n que une a la naci&oacute;n insular con el mundo se encuentra bajo el agua y est&aacute; rota en dos puntos. Los expertos estiman que su reparaci&oacute;n podr&iacute;a llevar hasta un mes, dependiendo de lo que descubran una vez que lleguen al lugar. Los esfuerzos de ayuda tambi&eacute;n se han visto obstaculizados por la gruesa capa de ceniza volc&aacute;nica que cubri&oacute; la pista del aeropuerto principal.
