Nativos del este y sur de &Aacute;frica, estos ant&iacute;lopes de los bosques son criaturas herb&iacute;voras, por lo que pasan gran parte de su tiempo buscando hojas para comer. Este hermoso animal a&uacute;n se puede encontrar con facilidad en la parte sur del continente, ya que es una especie protegida en muchos pa&iacute;ses. Adem&aacute;s, hay grandes cantidades de ellos en reservas regionales, como el Parque Nacional Kruger de Sud&aacute;frica.<\/p>\n<p>Esta es una de las especies de ant&iacute;lopes m&aacute;s grandes del mundo: un macho adulto puede pesar entre 120 y 315 kilos y medir hasta metro y medio del piso al hombro. Quiz&aacute;s una de sus caracter&iacute;sticas m&aacute;s impresionantes son sus cuernos retorcidos, que solo poseen los machos. Por lo general, forman de dos a dos giros y medio y alcanzan, en promedio, hasta 1.20 metros si se enderezaran. &iexcl;Incluso se sabe de un macho tiene cuernos de 1.88 metros de largo! Estos cuernos comienzan a crecer cuando el macho tiene entre seis y 12 meses de edad y alcanzan su longitud completa cuando el animal tiene seis a&ntilde;os.<\/p>\n<p>A pesar de que estos cuernos podr&iacute;an causar da&ntilde;o sin problema, el gran kud&uacute; generalmente no es un animal agresivo. De vez en cuando, los machos se enfrentan entre ellos&ndash;usando los cuernos&ndash;, especialmente si son del mismo tama&ntilde;o y estatura. En estos casos, un macho establece su dominio poni&eacute;ndose de lado para parecer lo m&aacute;s grande posible hasta que el otro retrocede. Cuando se esconden, pueden permanecen completamente inm&oacute;viles, incluso bajo el sol abrasador. Esto los protege de sus principales depredadores, que son los leones, los licaones y las hienas manchadas. No son tan r&aacute;pidos como las otras especies de kud&uacute;, como el kud&uacute; menor, por lo que en lugar de escapar por terreno abierto, saltan a trav&eacute;s de arbustos y alrededor de &aacute;rboles peque&ntilde;os para perder a los depredadores.<\/p>\n<p>Los machos suelen permanecer solos, aunque como solteros pueden formar peque&ntilde;os grupos. Esto es bastante diferente de las hembras, que forman peque&ntilde;os grupos de tres a diez ejemplares con sus cr&iacute;as. Un macho suele unirse a la manada solo durante la temporada de apareamiento. El kud&uacute; mayor tiene un periodo de gestaci&oacute;n de ocho meses y la hembra pre&ntilde;ada se separa del grupo para dar a luz. Luego esconde a su cr&iacute;a en el monte durante cuatro o cinco semanas y regresa solo para amamantar.<\/p>\n<p>Despu&eacute;s de eso, la cr&iacute;a comenzar&aacute; a unirse a su madre en la naturaleza y, a los tres o cuatro meses, siempre estar&aacute; a su lado. El kud&uacute; mayor crece r&aacute;pidamente y a los seis meses ya es bastante independiente.<\/p>\n<p>Si bien no se considera que el gran kud&uacute; est&eacute; amenazado, todav&iacute;a existen preocupaciones sobre la especie. Como sucede con muchos animales, su h&aacute;bitat se est&aacute; erosionando a medida que la gente lo transforma en tierras de cultivo. Tambi&eacute;n pueden ser objeto de cazadores furtivos por su carne y sus cuernos. Afortunadamente, por ahora, la poblaci&oacute;n a&uacute;n es lo suficientemente grande como para que los conservacionistas no los consideren amenazados o en peligro de extinci&oacute;n.\n<\/p>\n<h2>El gran kud&uacute;
