El detalle y la claridad de las fotograf&iacute;as son asombrosos, y es emocionante pensar que Webb puede explorar los rincones m&aacute;s profundos del espacio como nunca antes. Con la publicaci&oacute;n de estas im&aacute;genes, podemos comparar las capacidades de Webb con las del telescopio espacial con el que est&aacute;bamos m&aacute;s familiarizados: el Hubble.<\/p>\n<p>Lanzado en 1990, el telescopio espacial Hubble todav&iacute;a funciona y los astronautas le dan mantenimiento en el espacio gracias a su ubicaci&oacute;n en la &oacute;rbita terrestre baja. Seg&uacute;n la NASA, desde que comenz&oacute; oficialmente su desarrollo en 1977, el Hubble ha costado 16 mil millones de d&oacute;lares (ajustado a la inflaci&oacute;n de 2021), que no incluye las misiones de despliegue y reparaci&oacute;n. En comparaci&oacute;n, el James Webb, que tard&oacute; 20 a&ntilde;os en construirse, le cost&oacute; a la NASA alrededor de 10 mil millones de d&oacute;lares.<\/p>\n<p>Aunque existe la idea err&oacute;nea de que el telescopio Webb se desarroll&oacute; para reemplazar al Hubble, no es verdad. Los telescopios funcionan de manera diferente y est&aacute;n destinados a complementarse mientras el Hubble tambi&eacute;n permanezca operativo. Esta diferencia es importante porque el gran espejo de Webb puede captar longitudes de onda de luz m&aacute;s largas y distantes, lo que significa que puede percibir objetos 100 veces m&aacute;s tenues que el Hubble. Dise&ntilde;ado para capturar luz infrarroja o radiaci&oacute;n t&eacute;rmica, el Webb necesita temperaturas m&aacute;s bajas que las del Hubble. Por eso, su &oacute;rbita est&aacute; cuatro veces m&aacute;s lejos de la Tierra que la del Hubble.<\/p>\n<p>Si bien esta distancia le da a Webb sus poderosas capacidades de im&aacute;genes infrarrojas, lo que permite una mirada m&aacute;s profunda del universo que las im&aacute;genes de luz visible del Hubble, no se le puede dar servicio. El hecho de que los astronautas hayan podido darle mantenimiento el Hubble a lo largo de los a&ntilde;os ciertamente ha extendido su vida &uacute;til. Para el Webb, el que no se pueda contar con misiones de reparaci&oacute;n podr&iacute;a ser un problema potencial.<\/p>\n<p>Pero por ahora, podemos decir que las primeras im&aacute;genes de Webb han mostrado c&oacute;mo el telescopio espacial m&aacute;s nuevo de la NASA supera las fotos del Hubble. Como el Hubble tambi&eacute;n ha tomado im&aacute;genes de las mismas &aacute;reas que se muestran en las fotos en color iniciales de Webb, es posible compararlas y, al hacerlo, los resultados son sorprendentes. Las &aacute;reas polvosas vistas por el Hubble se transformaron m&aacute;gicamente cuando las c&aacute;maras infrarrojas de Webb despejaron el camino y nos mostraron lo que hay debajo. Y las &aacute;reas que aparecen en blanco en las tomas del Hubble en realidad est&aacute;n llenas de detalles ricos cuando el espejo de Webb extrae la luz de los objetos tenues.
