Le photographe Horia Manolache<\/a> est basé à San Francisco, la ville comptant la 2ème plus grande population de personnes sans-abri des États-Unis. Il pense que les communautés sans-abri sont souvent incomprises et victimes de stéréotypes injustes. Il a donc lancé un projet intitulé The Prince and the Pauper<\/em> (“Le Prince et l'Indigent”) afin de les montrer sous un nouveau jour. Dans une série de doubles portraits, chacun des modèles apparaît sur la partie gauche, portant ses vêtements du quotidien; sur la partie droite, la même personne est habillée pour la carrière de ses rêves, posant fièrement, le regard comme tourné vers un avenir plus prometteur.<\/p>\n

Les images ont été crées dans un studio créé par Manolache dans une chambre d'hôtel, contre un arrière-plan noir pour créer un effet inspiré du film noir. L'idée était de mettre en lumière leurs expressions et leurs émotions les plus pures, sans la distraction de l'environnement. L'image est cadrée de très près, transmettant une intimité poignante qui incite à un dialogue silencieux entre le sujet et le spectateur.<\/p>\n

Pour les photos en tenue professionnelle, Manolache a acheté et loué ces vêtements et accessoires sur eBay et Amazon, et sa femme lui a prêté main forte avec la coiffure et le maquillage. Pourtant, il ne s'agit pas uniquement de faire semblant : il a aidé ses modèles à faire un pas de plus vers leur futur idéal, en leur offrant de la nourriture, de l'argent et des vêtements, ou même en les guidant vers les endroits sûrs pour dormir. Il explique : “Je suis photographe depuis un moment maintenant, et je me suis demandé pendant des années comment aider les gens grâce à la photographie… J'ai compris que la photographie, tout comme l'écriture, peut changer les mentalités et résoudre des problèmes.”<\/p>\n

Manolache a lancé une campagne de financement participatif, dont il espère aidera à changer la conversation autour des sans-abri.<\/p>\n
