Il d&eacute;barque avec 40$ en poche, un pendentif dor&eacute; contenant une m&egrave;che de cheveux de la fille qu'il a laiss&eacute;e derri&egrave;re lui, et son r&ecirc;ve de travailler comme charpentier. Il a l'espoir de b&acirc;tir une vie meilleure aux &Eacute;tats-Unis. Malheureusement, c'est sans compter sur la myriade d'obstacles auxquels il devra faire face.<\/p>\n<p>Comme des centaines de milliers d'autres immigr&eacute;s de New-York, Riis s'installe dans l'un des logements collectifs de la ville, notoirement insalubres et exigus. Vivant dans la mis&egrave;re et incapable de trouver un emploi stable, Riis occupe divers postes, de travailleur agricole &agrave; ouvrier m&eacute;tallurgiste, avant de d&eacute;crocher un job d'apprenti-journaliste &agrave; la <em>New York News Association<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Il fait rapidement ses preuves et se fait un nom dans d'autres journaux, dont le <em>New-York Tribune<\/em>, qui l'embauche comme reporter pour la police. Il commence ainsi &agrave; organiser ses propres rassemblements &mdash;souvent dans des &eacute;glises &mdash; durant lesquels il montre ses images et parle des probl&egrave;mes dont il a &eacute;t&eacute; t&eacute;moin. Il ne gagne pas beaucoup d'argent, mais il rencontre des acteurs du changement, qui ont le pouvoir d'agir pour pour r&eacute;gler ces probl&egrave;mes. C'est notamment gr&acirc;ce &agrave; l'une de ses conf&eacute;rences qu'il rencontre le r&eacute;dacteur en chef du magazine qui publiera <em>How the Other Half Lives<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Alors que<em> How the Other Half Lives<\/em> gagne en reconnaissance, Riis a de nombreux admirateurs, dont Theodore Roosevelt. Bien qu'il ne soit pas encore pr&eacute;sident, Roosevelt est hautement influent. Lorsqu'il est nomm&eacute; &agrave; la pr&eacute;sidence du Bureau des Commissaires du d&eacute;partement de Police de New-York, il se tourne vers Riis pour l'aider &agrave; comprendre comment la police travaille la nuit. Alors qu'ils effectuent une inspection de routine, ils se rendent compte que neuf des dix policiers en service ce soir-l&agrave; sont absents. Riis publie cette observation dans le journal. Suite &agrave; cela, la police fera preuve d'une pr&eacute;sence exceptionnelle durant chaque service de nuit, et ce pour le restant du mandat de Roosevelt.<\/p>\n<p>Riis contribue &eacute;galement &agrave; exposer des probl&egrave;mes li&eacute;s &agrave; l'eau potable. Dans une s&eacute;rie d'articles, il publie des photos aujourd'hui disparues de la ligne de partage des eaux. Il explique : &#8220;J'ai pris mon appareil et j'ai suivi la ligne de distribution des eaux, photographiant mes preuves l&agrave; o&ugrave; elles se trouvaient. Les villes les plus peupl&eacute;es &eacute;vacuent leurs &eacute;gouts directement dans notre eau potable. Je suis all&eacute; chez mon m&eacute;decin pour lui demand&eacute; combien de jours le bacille du chol&eacute;ra pouvait survivre et se multiplier dans l'eau potable. Sept jours environ, m'a-t-on r&eacute;pondu. J'avais une nouvelle cause &agrave; d&eacute;fendre&#8221;. Son article a pouss&eacute; la ville de New York &agrave; acheter le terrain autour du r&eacute;servoir New Croton, et a accru la vigilance &agrave; l'&eacute;gard du chol&eacute;ra.<\/p>\n<p>Ses &eacute;crits sont aussi &agrave; l'origine d'enqu&ecirc;tes sur les conditions de vie dangereuses dans les habitations communes.
