Ramasser des coquillages et des cailloux sur la plage est un passe-temps populaire pour beaucoup d'entre nous, mais pour l’artiste new-yorkaise Anna Chan<\/a>, c’est devenu « une sorte d'obsession ». Chan est une créatrice de bijoux, mais, comme bien d’autres, son travail a ralenti pendant les confinements liés à la crise sanitaire. Elle et sa fille de 10 ans ont passé leurs journées à la plage, où elles ont commencé à collectionner des coquillages et à en faire des sculptures inspirées d'animaux.<\/p>\n

« Ayant travaillé à petite échelle presque toute ma vie, pouvoir sculpter de grandes pièces de mes mains était vraiment libérateur, surtout en ces temps difficiles », raconte Chan à My Modern Met. « J’ai vu un grand potentiel dans ce nouveau médium et j’étais déterminée à continuer à peaufiner mon travail, alors j’ai stocké du sable et des coquillages dans mon garage, et c’est là que je travaille aujourd’hui. »<\/p>\n

Chan a d'abord créée une tortue faite de sable et de coquillages, et son portfolio présente aujourd'hui toute une gamme d’animaux terrestres et marins : un oiseau fait à partir de pétoncles, de moules, de palourdes et de queues de crabes, la crinière d’un lion sculptée à partir de grandes coquilles brisées. Chan choisit soigneusement des coquillages qui correspondent aux caractéristiques de l’animal qu’elle créée « Les coquillages sont comme des petits bijoux pour moi, chacun d’eux étant une mosaïque qui trouve sa place dans le tableau d’ensemble », révèle-t-elle. « Je suis inspirée par leurs couleurs, leur texture et leurs formes, et même les morceaux cassés, j’y trouve de la beauté. »<\/p>\n

Ce qui a commencé comme une occupation pendant le confinement est maintenant devenu le centre de la pratique artistique de Chan. « Mes sculptures s’inspirent des matériaux que j’utilise. J’ai travaillé avec de l’argile, de la cire, du métal, du tissu, etc. dans le passé, mais aucun d’entre eux n’est aussi intuitif que le sable », dit l’artiste. « C’est le matériau auquel je me sens le plus liée, mes mains savent exactement quoi faire quand je crée avec. »<\/p>\n
