Le photographe et documentariste Ben Garvin<\/a> a consacré sa carrière à la narration. Et l'une des histoires qu'il aime le plus partager est l'agonie et l'extase des coureurs de marathon. Il a documenté plusieurs courses dans Twin Cities<\/span><\/i> (surnom “les villes jumelles” donné à la région Minneapolis-Saint Paul), où il est basé, et il était donc parfaitement logique qu'il se rende à Boston pour capturer le marathon de cette année. Après une absence de deux ans, il a tenu à documenter les émotions des coureurs à l'issue de cette course mythique.<\/span><\/p>\n

Magnifiquement prises en noir et blanc, les photographies de Garvin capturent la gamme d'émotions ressenties lorsque ces coureurs franchissent la ligne d'arrivée. Certains triomphent – les mains levées en l'air – tandis que d'autres pleurent d'un mélange de joie et d'épuisement. Les marathons ne sont pas une blague et ces coureurs passent des mois à s'entraîner pour le moment. Les images de Garvin montrent à quel point chacun réagit différemment lorsque son corps est poussé à la limite.<\/span><\/p>\n

Le marathon de Boston, qui a débuté en 1897, attire des athlètes du monde entier. Après le tragique attentat à la bombe de 2013 et l'annulation de l'année dernière, la première dans l'histoire de la course, le marathon de Boston a connu son lot de défis ces dernières années. Cela a rendu le parcours de Garvin jusqu'à la course encore plus spécial.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Le marathon de Boston de cette année était particulièrement festif après l'annulation de l'événement l'année dernière”, a déclaré Garvin à My Modern Met. “Il y avait un sentiment tangible de soulagement et d'unité dans l'air, ce qui rendait difficile la prise d'une mauvaise photo. La variété des corps et des capacités qui traversent la ligne d'arrivée me fait souvent pleurer et Boston n'était pas différent. J'essaie de rester neutre, mais je finis souvent par applaudir. C'est un véritable honneur d'être là pour assister à des milliers et des milliers de ces moments en quelques heures, et je fais de mon mieux pour en capturer quelques-uns et les partager avec le monde.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Garvin, qui peut prendre jusqu'à 6 000 photos lors de ces séances marathon, est toujours prêt avec son appareil photo. Alors que les coureurs défilent, les histoires humaines ne manquent pas à raconter. Et même si c'est un travail fatigant, le matériel créatif qu'il fournit permet à Garvin de continuer.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Il y a le sentiment constant que je rate un grand moment après un grand moment. Ce qui me soutient, ce sont ces quelques fois où tout s'aligne, que je me concentre sur un coureur et que je reste avec lui et qu'il partage quelque chose de brut, de beau et d'honnête. Cela me soutient et en vaut la peine à chaque fois.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Après avoir été annulé en 2020, le marathon de Boston a fait un retour triomphal.<\/h2>\n
