Lively Abstract Brushstrokes Reveal Detailed Cityscapes

Using large, swift brushstrokes and irregular splatters, Korean artist Jieun Park reveals urban landscapes hidden beneath the surface of her paintings. From a distance, the broad strokes are simply a bundle of abstract lines. However, upon closer inspection, bits of an urban landscape emerge from the seemingly haphazard marks.

Park only exposes small sections of the detailed neighborhoods, buildings, and tree-lined streets at night. Inspired by her feelings of loneliness while traveling, the combination of realism with the abstract produce a distinct desire and longing for more.

Park says, “My personal feelings are described as under-painted ink marks which are instinctively spread and dropped on the surface. As I create relatively realistic images of the city within the abstract ink marks, I try to record ourselves in this fast changing city and its double sidedness where colorful impression coexists with loneliness.”
