Modern Tribute to Artist Frida Kahlo’s Powerful Self-Portraits

In this series, Bulgarian photographer Kiril Stanoev pays tribute to Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. During her career, Kahlo produced quite a large number of self-portraits through which she was able to express herself and her emotions. Kahlo once said, “They thought I was a Surrealist, but I wasn't. I never painted dreams. I painted my own reality.” In honor of this renowned painter, Stanoev created Tribute to Frida, a series of modern photographic interpretations of the young artist.

Collaborating with a team including style and make-up by Diana Stoyanova and hair by Stanislav Ivanov, Stanoev transformed the face of model Donna Bangiozova into a contemporary Frida Kahlo. The quiet, reflective settings and soft focus portray the essence of the artist's sufferings and sadness. As Bangiozova gazed wistfully off into the distance, Stanoev captured the admirable determination and strength that Frida Kahlo carried with her throughout her life.
