NY Firefighters in Times Square

Yesterday, we saw history being made as U.S. troops killed Osama bin Laden, or the most wanted face of terrorism, in Pakistan. As details start to trickle out on the covert operations surrounding the Al Qaeda leader's death, there will also be countless photos showing us how this development affects everyday people from all around the world.

One of the most iconic and unforgettable images will, no doubt, be this one taken by photojournalist Michael Appleton for The New York Times. It's of New York firefighters who gathered Sunday night to watch the Times Square news ticker.

More than 300 firefighters died on Sept. 11, 2001 from the terrorist attacks.
