Complex Cobweb Represents an Ever-Changing City

Mumbai-based artist Reena Saini Kallat recently produced this painted sculptural installation across the facade of Bhau Daji Lad Museum, the oldest museum in Mumbai. For the piece, simply called Untitled (Cobweb/Crossings), Kallat was inspired by the interwoven, organic form of a cobweb and the complexities that it represents. The installation, formed out of fiber-reinforced plastic and metal, spans 45 feet x 55 feet x 660 inches and consists of hundreds of woven stamps with street names etched onto them. The fragmented sections of the cobweb visually represent how the stories of the past are often pieced together from memory.

The particular structure that Kallat chose was constructed in the 1800s and represents the stories of the city's changes and transformations that have taken place throughout the years. Particularly, the artist is interested in the names that we assign to places and to roads that so easily shift and change with the times. She says, “While unknowingly, unconsciously, histories are constantly being interpreted and altered, what's interesting is the comfort and ease with which people shift between the old and new names, often referring to a place with numerous appellations at the same time.”
