Using her sketchbook as an “artist’s diary,” Elena Limkina creates unique compilations of exquisite ink illustrations. With an eclectic taste in subject matter, the Moscow-based artist creates drawings of everything from animals to architecture, which cohesively co-exist as spreads in her sketchbook.
Like many artists, Limkina dabbles in a range of mediums and materials. Though she considers herself a painter first and foremost, she often experiments with dip pens when creating her signature sketches. Seemingly inspired by a mix of influences—including beautiful Baroque decoration, vintage botanical illustrations, and anatomical studies—she explores and presents each subject in great detail, paying particular attention to tonality, which she achieves through a cross-hatching technique.
Given the eclectic nature of her sketches, it is not surprising to learn that Limkina’s background is just as diverse. While she has been interested in art since, at a very young age, she “escaped from the garden to a nearby preschool watercolor studio,” she eventually decided to study medical engineering. Today, however, she works as an artist and illustrator, showcasing her stunning work on Instagram and selling prints on Etsy.
