Have you ever sat at your desk and started daydreaming of bigger things? Perhaps, on a cosmic scale, with a deep and longing desire to explore the unknown reaches of space? We can’t offer you a trip to the stars, but we can introduce you to DeskSpace, a desk accessory that allows you to “experience the beauty of the solar system every day.” Designed by DeskX and handcrafted from nine different gemstones, each spherical object represents a planet in our solar system, and sits arranged in a bespoke wooden stand.

With “a love of design, [and] a fascination with space,” DeskX is a group a three designers who wanted to combine their technical design skills with their interests. The trio worked tirelessly to find the perfect materials to accurately represent each of the nine planets. “We visited factories and suppliers worldwide and even cross referenced NASA satellite images with the finished products to ensure they are as accurate as they are stunning,” explained the designers.

Each chosen gemstone was mined from a variety of locations across the globe. For planet Earth, the designers managed to source Sodalite, a royal blue-colored mineral with an isometric crystal system. Jupiter was formed from a golden red metamorphic rock called Tiger’s Eye, and Mars was sculpted from Mahogany Obsidian, a volcanic red and black-colored glass.

To achieve each of the glossy, spherical forms, the raw blocks of material are first washed in preparation for cutting into smaller shapes. A diamond edge saw then cuts the the gems into appropriately sized cubes, which are then hand-shaped by experienced craftsmen into spheres using a diamond grit grinding wheel. Each piece is then meticulously checked for imperfections, and once it’s passed quality control, it’s then polished and buffed to bring out the vibrant colors and shine. Each DeskSpace set even comes with a hardback book containing educational information about each planet, and the materials used to make their gemstone representation.

DeskX are currently running campaigns on Kickstarter and Indiegogo to make DeskSpace a reality; however, in less than 48 hours, the exciting project exceeded its funding goal by 500%. With an estimated delivery of April 2018, you can get your hands on your own DeskSpace set by selecting from the variety of options on the current Indiegogo campaign.
