Wood-Burned Illustrations of Animals

Inspired by nature and wildlife, artist Julie Bender etches illustrations of various animals by burning her images into wood. By employing the traditional art of pyrography, which dates back to ancient Egypt, Bender essentially paints with fire. The art involves scorching a piece of wood, or other natural material, with a heated metal tip, in place of a brush or pencil. It's hard to believe that Bender's works aren't sepia-toned photographs.

Modernizing a Classic Norman Rockwell Painting

Norman Rockwell's The Runaway has been fantastically remade in Halloween-style by artist Luke Radl. It features Spiderman as the cop, a pirate as the waiter, and a Green Goblin dressed boy as the runaway. Love this modern update. It appeared on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post on September 20, 1958 (see below).

Surreal Paintings Offer Dual Perspectives

Taking surrealistic cues from Dali and Magritte, painter Mihai Criste expands on the unusually expressive art form in his illusionary images. The Romania-based artist boasts a vast portfolio of imaginative works that tackle the cunning abilities of visual elements. Each image offers dual perspectives. It's a matter of what the spectator sees first and their ability to reevaluate what's in front of them, in order to see the optically crafty details.

Head to Toe Covered in Ladybugs

There's a Batman and a Catwoman so why shouldn't there by a Lady Bug? Hungarian artist Fulop Gabor has taken the word “ladybug” quite literally in this amazing sculpture. Calling his interpretation Lady Bug, this standing yellow and red figure is covered in a swarm of those tiny insects which you can only see and fully realize in the up-close shots.
