Captivating Portraits of Luminous Underwater Creatures

These underwater portraits of creatures who inhabit the sea are filled with such character and life. Hawaii-based photographer Joshua Lambus documents the amazing detail of many aquatic species, stating that he hopes to show people things they haven't seen before or to entice people to see something familiar in a new way. In his collection entitled Blackwater, Lambus captures each luminous body as it glows brightly against a dark black background.

Spectacular Underwater Whale Shark Fashion Shoot

In an effort to raise awareness about conservation and the environment, marine life photographer Shawn Heinrichs collaborated with fashion photographer Kristian Schmidt on this completely awe-inspiring underwater project. The images feature enchanting combinations where human models swim in sync with whale sharks, the world's largest fish. Heinrichs and Schmidt first met on a whale shark trip and instantly knew that they would be a great team.

Emotive Portraits of People Submerged Underwater

Looking through photographer Alban Grosdidier's series, aptly titled Drowning, I found myself holding my breath. The collection of portraits give us all a taste of claustrophobia induced by the all-encompassing element of water. There's an involuntary reaction to these images that forces the viewer to empathize with the submerged models.

Pretty Underwater Photos Look like Watercolor Paintings

While we're use to seeing paintings that look like pictures (photo-realism), it's not often we come across photos that look like paintings. Toronto-based, self-taught photographer Barabara Cole (who we first wrote about here) is a master at achieving this effect. Her Chromatics series tests the nature of photography and its impact on our experiences of reality by making her underwater figures look abstract or amorphous. (Yes, that's an actual person lurking under the water.)
