6,000-Year-Old Hollowed Out Tree is a Bar Inside

Nature is often the inspiration for architecture and design. We've even seen our fair share of fully functional tree houses, but in South Africa there is an entirely unique, hollowed out tree called Sunland Big Baobab that has actually been converted into a bar. According to the pub's website, the venue is the widest documented baobab (a type of tree normally found in the hot, dry savannas of sub-Saharan Africa)

This Year’s Ice Hotel in Sweden Recreates Frankenstein’s Lab

Christian Strmqvist and Karl-Johan Ekeroth of PINPIN Studio have developed a brand new room for the famed ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjrvi, Sweden called It's Alive! The room, made entirely out of ice and snow, is designed in the likeness of a mad scientist's laboratory la Frankenstein. Being their third venture in creating an ice room, the duo have maintained their sense of whimsy, allowing guests to playfully imagine their own scenario in the space.

Giant Hovering Roundabout for Cyclists in the Netherlands

Hovenring is an incredible suspended roundabout conceptualized and designed by IPV Delft specifically for cyclists to safely make their way across congested traffic by traveling overhead. Located between Eindhoven and Veldhoven in the Netherlands, above the Heerbaan/Meerenakkerweg intersection, the circular steel bridge offers an alternative route for cyclists as well as an aesthetically pleasing landmark for locals and visitors.

Translucent Home Built Around a Tree in a Kazakh Forest

Located in a forest on the mountains of Almaty in Kazakhstan, architect Aibek Almasov of A.Masow Design Studio has designed a concept for a modern spiritual retreat. The project, known as Tree in the house, presents a cylindrical, four-story glass space featuring an encased tree in the center. A winding white staircase allows visitors who enter the “tree house” to ascend the towering space, spiraling upward around the centric tree.
