Modest-Looking Mosque is a Dazzling Dream Inside

A spectacular surprise awaits visitors to Iran's Shah Cheragh. This funerary monument and mosque, located in Shiraz, has been a treasured pilgrimage monument since the 14th century. Translating to “King of the Light,” Shah Cheragh houses the tombs of Ahmad and Muhammad, sons of the the seventh Shiite Imam Musa al-Kadhim and brothers of the eighth Shiite Imam Ali al-Ridha.

Old Coach House Transformed Into Modern Home Using Materials from Demolished Office

What do you do if you have a wooden office building from the 1950s on your property next to a former coach house from 1895? If you're architect and designer Rolf Bruggink, you see an opportunity to transform an historical building using materials from another space. With the help of fellow architect and designer Niek Wagemans, Bruggink refitted the coach house using materials from the 1950s building, which he'd knocked down after purchasing the property in 2011.

Designed by architect David Adjaye, construction on this striking, 400,000-square-foot building took four years. It occupies the last remaining space on the National Mall, earning its place as a structure that’s compelling both inside and out.

Zaha Hadid Architects Construct Floating Ship on Historical Port House in Antwerp

When the city of Antwerp needed a smart design to help them unite the city's 500 port authority employees under one roof, the brief was multi-faceted. Not only would the building need to accommodate future expansion—Antwerp is Europe's second largest port, handling 26% of the continent's container shipping—but had to integrate the heritage of the protected former fire station already on site. In 2009, Zaha Hadid Architects unveiled their competition winning design.
