Giant Billowing Net With Over 360,000 Knots Hovers Over a Square in Munich

Fiber artist Janet Echelman has once again transformed an urban space with her monumental installations. The American artist's installation, titled Earthtime 1.26, was suspended over Munich's historic Odeonsplatz. Presented by Mercedes Benz, it hovered over the square for nearly two months. Weighing 700 pounds, the net covered an area of nearly 3,500 square feet and constantly changed color and shape. The work is part of Echelman's Earthtime series, which aims to show the interconnectedness between humans and nature.

670,000+ Flags Are Planted on the National Mall To Commemorate American Lives Lost to COVID-19

As the world continues to grapple with COVID-19, one artist is using her creativity to express her sadness for all the lives that have been lost. Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg is a Washington, D.C.-based artist who actively creates work that touches on social issues. Her latest installation is one of her largest to date—over 670,000 white flags planted on the National Mall to symbolize the American lives lost to the coronavirus.

Artist Ernesto Neto creates expansive crochet works that immerse the viewer within their woven worlds. His latest—and largest—fiber art piece to date is no exception. Titled SunForceOceanLife, the labyrinth installation at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston features a massive netted space that invites visitors to step inside and explore its interior pathways—all while suspended in the air.
