For the next few months, this interactive Swing Time installation on The Lawn on D in Boston invites residents and visitors to sit back and relax while swinging in one of 20 glowing hammocks. The temporary project was created by Hweler + Yoon Architecture and was developed as a way to “create a new type of city park” where everyone is invited to gather and play or exercise.
Each swing is custom made in three different sizes from welded polypropylene. Inside of the circular structures, LED lighting responds to movement depending on whether or not it is being used. At a standstill, the round form emits soft white lights, but then, as a visitor swings and rocks inside of the structure, an internal micro-controller changes the lighting from white to purple to indicate motion.
