UK-based, Guatemalan-born artist Camila Carlow was not deterred by the complexity of the human body when she was developing her series Eye Heart Spleen. For the project, she transformed a handful of normally grotesque, bloody organs into an array of greenery and beautiful blossoms.
Carlow collected all of the wild plants during early morning in Bristol and photographed the unusual arrangements in natural daylight. Intertwined branches serve as the trachea leading to the lungs and a large cluster of greenery becomes a human eyeball in the assortment of intricate sculptures. By merging concepts of the human body with nature, Carlow explores the biological structures that continue to work and thrive regardless of everyday obstacles like junk foods that harm the body or pollution that challenges plant growth.
“This work invites the viewer to regard our vital structures as beautiful living organisms, and to contemplate the miraculous work taking place inside our bodies, even in this very moment,” says Carlow.
